Opened in 2023, the Macoupin Voting Center is the county’s easier way for voters to cast their early in person vote. It also has increased voting machine and election security while allowing for more convenient working areas for election workers.
Located directly south of the Courthouse just east of the Old Jail, voters can pull in and walk right up to the voting conference room as opposed to the previous walking to the Courthouse and getting up to the next floor up from ground level to vote. Macoupin County was able to utilize a grant for the purchase and nearly all renovations of the Voting Center due to the County Election office being named a Center for Election Excellence. Using this grant, the county was able to achieve goals outlined by space use consultants who as far back as 2005 cited issues such as “during early voting, the County Clerk is forced to set up voting and registration booths in the hallway. This does not provide privacy for voters and causes confusion as many times the hallway is also packed with people awaiting court,” and “…voting equipment are easily visible to the public throughout the building.” Recommendations in these reports include “fund the project with a combination of grants, private donations and county resources.” County Clerk Pete Duncan and the Macoupin County Board were able to use this grant funding to achieve a better voting experience for voters and more secure storage of voting machines and election materials.
